I am not able to find out the Mastercard data analytics opt-out page; I know it existed: it was a webpage where you enter your credit card number asking to opt-out for their data "analytic".
I would be very cautious about going on a forum called Hacker News to ask strangers for a URL where I put in my credit card number. Or anywhere else, really.
I agree partially. As gruez said, the term "hacker" being used in that sense will irk true hackers.
I do see the humor though - even though the situation is not similar, it made me think of the website http://ismycreditcardstolen.com/ - we used to share it around as a joke :-)
> Not sure why this is downvoted. I think it's a legitimate point to raise about being cautious.
Not really, because anyone that has been using the site for a while would know that "hacker" isn't "hacking" in the "break into computers and do bad stuff" kind, but the "hackathon" kind.
The comment did say that prudence would be warranted regardless of the site (their last sentence).
It would also be reasonable, albeit somewhat presumptuous, to assume that there are a number of black hat "hackers" on a site that shares a camaraderie around the hacking spirit and shares many security related stories/vulnerabilities.
I think your statement is also somewhat presumptuous. Sure there are software devs with a hackathon mindset. But what about the white hat hackers or technology managers who are not devs?
