If government sponsored scientists lose their livelihood where else can they go from here? I suspect a non-zero number of them will leave the country to find a better scientific climate. Itβs a shame.
Well, other countries can only absorb so many scientists. It's basically a complete disaster for many research fields (and also research universities in general).
More like a major disruption than a complete disaster. If the funding cuts actually happen, I expect that states would create their own funding agencies. At least the ones that care about academic research. After a while, the impact would be limited to research universities in states without good funding instruments. Which would not be that different from the situation in Europe.
In the long term, there would be economic consequences, but old guys like Trump won't live to see it.
