I got banned from Upwork. I'm in the US and started my account last month, completing less than 10 contracts. The problems began shortly after my first withdrawal. Upwork asked me to re-verify twice, even though I had already completed verification when I opened the account. They claimed my profile photo and driver's license (DL) didn’t match. My hair was shorter in the DL, but it should have been clear enough.
Upwork restricted my account for a week, stringing me along until they eventually banned it without providing any clear explanation. They never asked for a verification video call or anything that could have resolved the issue.
My Impression of Upwork:
Dominant: Upwork is the main platform for side income if you’re not ready to fully commit to freelancing or consulting. It’s also good for finding work when your main job is slow.
Microtransactions: Upwork charges money for 'connects,' which you need to submit proposals to clients. Essentially, you have to pay just to bid on work. This feels shady. While they might justify it as a way to reduce AI spam or increase user commitment, they could simply ban the spammers directly. I can confirm they have no problem banning users.
Monthly Subscription: They offer a $20 premium tier that boosts your profile and gives access to a ChatGPT client. I felt pressured to buy this when I started, and it felt like a cash grab. I already have a $20 subscription to Claude, so I don’t need OA looking over my work. Sure, recurring revenue is great for Upwork’s bottom line, but considering they already skim 10% off everything you earn, it feels excessive.
Clients: Working with clients on Upwork is straightforward, and they pay out reliably, minus Upwork’s 10% cut. If you need side money, the potential is there. The pay isn’t always great, but it’s better than nothing.
Avoid the Bear: Don’t expect Upwork support to be your friend. They offer no clues if you’ve triggered something in their system. I may have checked my account at odd hours, which could have flagged something. Avoid checking in bed, watch your grammar, and use good photos. I’m American with no Russian affiliation, and I still got banned.
Could they be banning new workers to keep prices high? New freelancers often charge less, and 10% of $1,000 is more than 10% of $800. There are a lot of new workers on the platform now. I don't know.
There’s nothing better than Upwork right now. It’s where most clients —and money— are. You’ll have to work for less than you’d like initially, especially with so much talent available. Upwork dominates the space. They are the king.
I’ll appeal the ban, but it seems rare they reverse bans. I’m going to give Fiverr a try. If anyone knows of any other good freelance sites, I’d love to hear about them and your experiences.
