Milk to the rescue for diabetics? Cow produces human insulin in milk (sciencedaily.com)

We already produce insulin in yeast. Is it really easier to raise an entire cow, milk it, and then filter the insulin out of the milk?

I don't know anything about insulin production, but if supply is not able to keep up with demand with the current production method, then a new highly scalable way to produce it ought to be really good news, shouldn't it?

The exact yield of this method seems unknown for now, but the article discusses one large herd being able to produce the world's supply. If it's even close to being like that, it seems to be a game-changer.

Potentially 1.4 million units of Insulin per day per cow!

Holy cow!

Edit: As per WebMD a type 2 diabetic needs 10 units of insulin per day.

Quite interesting what can be achieved by combining a bit of engineering with nature, vs just manufacturing drugs.
