We didn't try to take over the world, but we did give cause for others to want to take over the world (e.g. overly harsh response to WWI). Can't exonerate blame based on one event and not the timeline.

Indeed. The excessively punitive clauses of the Versailles Treaty created the conditions for Germany's ruin post WWI.
