This seems to be MS's response to a rather serious mistake in GRUB2 - a howler, I'd say.
I've never liked GRUB2 much. The configuration seems to freely mix executable code and data, which makes me tremble at the prospect of altering it. And I find it much harder to understand than GRUB Legacy (and that's saying something).
