Daily reminder that "carbon footprint" is a marketing term that BP invented back in 2005 to shift the responsibility away from themselves and onto the consumer. There's absolutely no change that you can make to your website (not even shutting it down) that will make any sort of difference to the climate situation. It's just feel-good pretense to avoid doing any actual activism.
Wherever the term might come from, I am inclined to disagree. Many websites today are so bloated with third party scripts and tracking, that those things far outweigh the actual content. Often the content could be a simple text. Instead the websites create an artificial need for transfering megabytes of data and higher CPU load to give me annoyances. Only through using an ad blocker, I can avoid the bloat. Many people will not avoid it and so the website creator shares some responsibility for the energy spent on loading and processing bloat.
