Not a fan of the article title or Lenovo particularly, but they nailed the specs on the device.
- 16:10 aspect display on these (and future ThinkPads)
- 16" screen (or 13" if you prefer)
- AMD Ryzen CPU
- AMD discrete graphics (option on 16")
- touchpad + trackpoint
Drawbacks are the not-quite-full height up/down arrow keys that they had been known for and soldered-in RAM. Another big question is can the hardware be trusted if running Linux? I don't recall any hardware security stories about Lenovo, only software ones, but still where's that line these days?
The specs are fine but the connectivity is horrendous especially that there is still a new generation of AMD notebooks coming out without thunderbolt support.
Lenovo still refuses to fix their trackpoint issue, where trackpoint randomly stops working on many of their newer model ThinkPads. The issue was reported 12 month ago.
It has most everything I want. 16:10 and Ryzen? Yes! I only have a few complaints:
- Only 2 USB ports?!
- Key-press depth too shallow
- Missing explicit physical left and right buttons on the touch pad
I feel like every manufacturer is just trying to build the same laptop now. There's not enough variety to hit the feature set I want. If I wanted a MacBook I'd just buy a MacBook. Is there no room in the market for a good laptop with plenty of ports, a great keyboard, and physical buttons?
The 16" has 4 USB-C, but the 13" basically means you're going to use power for one and possibly a display with built in port or a docking hub. If your display can also provide sufficient power and act as a dock/hub that could all work with one. I use an LG display which provides power but not the full wattage that the MacBook Pro wants so end up using two ports.
"Recycled black vegan leather" would be a perfect band name. Also a $1600 computer and Gen-Z, choose one.
It's a great notebook, nothing is remotely sustainable about it. Branding it as such however will differentiate this product, so good job on that. The so called eco-conscious business users don't usually know better.
You do know that the oldest Gen Z’s are a few years out of college, right? There are so many MBPs on campus that
a $1600 laptop isn’t making anyone blush anymore.
