Hands down my worst interview experience was one where I was grilled on exact versions of operating systems, compilers, and software I used. Then over the phone I was asked to implement some simple functions in C++ but the interviewer kept getting annoyed I'd use shorthand like "array of doubles" and wanted me to say it like I was dictating into a compiler! The interview was cut short after I made a few off by one mixups in the code, probably for the best...
I actually did one of these as well. We couldn't get the video call to work, so the interviewer ended up having me write the code down, and then read it to him over the phone.
At the time if felt pretty dumb (and still kinda does), but he was fairly reasonable about it, and most of the back and forth was me describing the algorithm to him.
I'm really not sure what the purpose of the call was! It was my first scheduled contact with the company after sending in my resume, but it was directly with the hiring manager and he got right into writing code over the phone. I've checked their Glassdoor page again this year and my experience seems common.
I did a coding interview over the phone with Google. This was around 2006 maybe 2007. I did it in my car with a notebook in my lap. I don't remember the question but it was "leetcodish"
