Elon despises the SEC and he might have found a way to mess with them by playing with a mostly unregulated market. Edit: Also, his name was used a lot by crypto scammers on Twitter and nothing was ever done about those. That might also have pissed him off even more.

Except 'messing with the SEC' is actually messing with innocent people who's protection is outside the remit of the SEC.
