If your thing is considerably worse than any (handwritten) HTML page, maybe you are doing it wrong? Well written HTML even without CSS is fast and accessible and this should be your baseline.

Modern CSS is extremely powerful and you can get good looking websites with just handwritten CSS. If you change your site once a week instead of uaing a CMS maybe consider using a static site generator like Lektor (fast, no need to worry about people hacking your wordpress instances).

If you really need server side code/interaction reduce dependecies and still let HTML do the heavy lifting.

I did some experiments with WASM and Rust and it is really neat, but IMO it doesn't beat the simplicity of a basic HTML page yet.
