I think THE most important tool useful towards better writing is better reading. Read the good stuff and avoid the crap. More Orwell and less Kerouac. Just read a lot of the good stuff. I'd say that a cook needs great taste first well before great culinary technique. If you can't taste the difference between crap and haute cuisine then mastering reduction will not help.
