OK, so "world’s largest democracy" was obviously India. But damn, learning that they're an Indian firm from their website was nontrivial. And perhaps I'm just tired.
Still, SocialCops is a disturbing name. Or is it just me? Does India really need social cops?
Yes India do need many more such companies that help in better governance. It is not easy to manage a diverse country of 1.2 billion people. Yet are discussing non-trivial things like names.
I suspect that you mean to say "trivial things like names".
But damn, SocialCops smacks of centralized social control. And then there's the biometrics-based national ID system. It's not unlike China. And perhaps for similar reasons. That is, extreme diversity, and intense divisiveness. Maybe that's the only viable option, but if so, it's sad.
I don't follow India news. But I have seen a lot about Hindu-Muslim conflict. Such as the Gujarat riots, and the destruction of the Babri Mosque. And now the current wave of Hindu nationalist violence, against Muslims and "immodest" women. Which, I gotta say, is an odd juxtaposition.
So yeah, I can see the argument for SocialCops. And a national ID system. And censorship of online media.
But it still bothers me, and I feel sad about it. But worse, I worry that such conflict is happening in so many places. Especially in the US, where I happen to live.
Also, this is arguably yet another impact of global climate change. And so it's likely to keep getting worse, with social disruption and resource conflict. Damn.
Still, SocialCops is a disturbing name. Or is it just me? Does India really need social cops?
