Plastic Straws are irrelevant in the greater picture, and the global boycott has nothing to do with them - but the broader picture of responsible resource management. Reducing, Re-Using, Repurposing, Redirecting(compost, energy), and finally Recycling are habits which the straw ban is meant to strengthen.

No serious person thinks banning plastic straws, in and of itself, has any purpose.
