I think germany is already doing something great with the Sovereign Tech Fund [0]. The support(ed) a lot of OSS projects so far.[1]

Funding "American" GNOME instead of KDE? Weird choice.

It's not about subsidizing, but about support for projects they deem important. Gnome is just one of many projects. And they have to apply for funding. It's not simply given to some projects. I'm from germany and use Gnome. So supporting Gnome is a good thing from my point of view.

I often think the same about people I (get to) know

I thought there's a fix incomming. But I can't find a link right now. Something about exactly the issue with "big green accept button", "small half hidden reject button".

Makes sense.

EU: “You need to respect PII”

The market: malicious compliance and obvious dark patterns

EU: sigh Ok, we’ll also have to tell you how you’re allowed to ask. drafts new legislation

If it's more than a million, it is "optimisation" not evasion. And it is mostly legal

What is your actual problem? You send 10€ to your mother and your bank asks your where you got them from and why you send them to your mum?

If you withdraw cash regularly it will get you flagged by the bank and you will probably have to answer some questions. Answering wrongly will get you terminated as a client.

Edit: ok, it's crypto. See posts bellow somewhere

Can you say something about the sums? I (in germany) got my rent money every month from my parents while I was a student. No problem. I withdraw something like 100€ per week for bars, backeries and other small expenses and I never ever had any problems.

It buffles me that so many people are jumping to conclusions although you provided so little context.

If you have a cash inflow of 50k per month and withdrow that much, the bank may think you pay people in cash, avoiding taxes (like on construction sites). Which is totaly legit IMO. But again, you gave almost no context..

My current problem is crypto related, but the main problem is that banks care if you use cash and will ask about it. I find it unreasonable.

Many banks have been blocking crypto transactions because it's the main currency of choice for organised crime to move money across borders in the modern era. My bank has sent me a message telling me that they will block any transaction they think is related to crypto, and if I want to use crypto I'm free to use other banks. Simple.

I think that's their choice. They can make that decision, and it's fine.

Why do you think you are entitled to demand a private enterprise allows you to use their services in any way you see fit without asking you questions?

Worth noting that it's mandatory to interact with a private bank in order to participate in the modern society.

Want to receive your salary? You need a bank.

Do you need to pay rent? You need a bank.

Do you want to receive social welfare? You need a bank.

As unfortunate as it is, banks have become a dependency for modern day living.

I don't think that is true, at least not EU wide. I frequently (have to) use cash and I was never flagged by any of my banks or had to provide any sort of receipts for my transactions, not the local one and not the international ones. The only exception was the sale of my car, as the transaction exceeded 10k, I had to provide a short explanation, which in my case was the purchasing agreement.

I am really curious how this has proven to be an issue for you or if this is just another banks bad crpyto thing?

>Which is totaly legit IMO

I do not know any jurisdiction in which intentionally avoiding tax is legal.

I meant it's legit that the bank gets suspicous. Sorry I'm not a native speaker

We put it in trash bins. Companies with contracts collect it. It get's shipped to asia or africa for recycling. Job done. Recycled ... It is dumped where ever it is convinient for the contracting company

But I totaly undersand your point. For me, it would also be real work to not put waste in the trash bin, but to drive somewhere to dispose it

> We put it in trash bins [...]

This isn't the case, at least in the US. Trash from trash bins is almost exclusively dealt with locally, whether in landfills or incinerators. Essentially zero US household trash is shipped internationally.

Recycling is another matter. Plastic recycling frequently does follow the path you mentioned.

For this reason it can sometimes be more environmentally friendly to throw away plastic waste, sequestering it in your local landfill, than "recycling" it into the Pacific ocean.

> This isn't the case, at least in the US. Trash from trash bins is almost exclusively dealt with locally, whether in landfills or incinerators.

It's exactly the same in Germany. I was talking about plastic.

In germany we recycle paper and "some" plastic. But all I've seen/read is, it's a miniscule amount. Like greenwashing. Most of it get's just shipped somewhere else with some super shady "we recycle it for you, so you can can wash you hands in innocence" deals. And IIRC it's the same for the US. During Covid there were numerous chinese container ships waiting on the US coast after unloading, to load "recycling material", because waiting was cheaper than driving back empty. (they just dump it somewhere in the end)

Actually if you look at EU export statistics, so little actual plastic waste gets exported to the Pacific (in contrast to wood chips going to Netherland power plants or cubed cars going wherever) that if 100% of it did end up in the ocean it would only increase the level of plastic outflow by a single percent. One of my earlier comments here has the more proof with links and stuff, it's just really buried and I don't feel like finding it right now

That's is absolutely not true. You should look things up before posting them to avoid repeating falsehoods.

Zero trash gets shipped. And any recycling that gets shipped is purchased by the receiver, which means they don't dump it because the want it.

> That sounds like a classic example of doing something and making the situation worse (aka almost every regulation ever)

Such a weird take.. without regulation we would still have child labor, slave labor, cancer causing shit in basically everything, no seatbelts, even worse corruption in politics and companies, .. list goes on ..

Same goes for sunglasses. I have a really diffcult time talking to someone without seeing thier eyes. Not beeing sure if thier attention is on me or somewhere else is really strange.

My expierience is totally the opposite. Every time I have to touch a make file, I don't understand shit and hate my life. I have to google basically everything. Syntax, commands, etc.. Obscure Syntax rules I forget when not touching the build files for more than a week.. same goes for basically every build system I ever used, except Cargo
