Thanks for your feedback! You can use it as a total beginner too, set your level to hsk 1 and use pinyin. The backend should still give you valuable feedback. I would start learning to form sentences right from the start, it’s more important in Mandarin than in e.g. European languages imo.
Thanks, it’s a common pain point in language learning imo, you reach a level where you know a lot of vocabulary but can’t really form sentences. Especially in mandarin. For me patterns were kind of a game changer.
Hi HN — I built this because most Chinese apps focus too much on isolated vocabulary and not enough on actually forming sentences.
This app teaches Chinese through the most frequently used sentence patterns. You actively build sentences and get instant AI feedback, so you’re practicing production instead of recognition.
It also uses FSRS for scheduling (for both flashcards and audio loops), and includes an AI assistant for help.
No account required to try it.
I’d especially appreciate feedback on:
- Whether the sentence-building approach feels effective
1. Like every year "The daily stoic"
2. "The twilight zone" by Werner Herzog
3. "Thinking fast and slow"
4. "Hang the red lantern"
5. Currently reading "Menschliches allzu menschliches" by Nietzsche
I feel like Thinkign fast and slow is one of those books on everyone's shelf that people like to show but nobody reads it due to its difficulty and readability. How did you like it?
I really like Werner Herzog. Too many good ones to list them all here. He brings in a lot of social implications of whatever subject he covers. A lot of randomness as well which is often quite funny. E.g. Encounters at the end of the world or Lo and behold: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lo_and_Behold,_Reveries_of_the...
Petter Mettler is a great film maker imo, e.g. Picture of Light, due to the poetic and philosophical elements mixed in with actual documentation. Visually very appealing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picture_of_Light
Another favorite film maker is Stanislav Mucha who covers a lot of European topics and in particular German. Very ironic and partly sarcastic. Favs are Absolute Warhola, a film about Andy Warhol's extended family in Slovakia:
