I don’t buy it. Your premise suggests new inference would make SoTA models performant on hardware that we already have in our hands. To prevent us from running local models, we would literally be forced to turn over existing hardware with such capabilities, prevented from building such machines without a suitable license, and so on. That sounds a lot like attempts at gun confiscation, and the result being that only criminals have weapons. This is not the way.

I believe that models on the level of the frontier if not now, then ~6-12 months ago, may well run on a box you can get at Best Buy. And that yes, this along with age verification and the copyright lobby will add to the push to restrict the hardware people are able to procure and operate. It will be difficult to confiscate old PCs, but a "Cash for Clunkers" style program can get lots of them off the market. And, by law and by convention, the modern internet will just refuse to talk to them.

Much of what we call "dystopian fiction" is actually just palette-swapped contemporary or historical fiction. People are appalled at the idea of {horrible thing} happening to them, not simply {horrible thing} happening in general.

And let’s be clear: when wielded by the unwashed masses, AI produces the same quality of systems as those low-code tools did. It still takes a human engineer to drive AI to produce a maintainable, cohesive, and reliable system. This may change at some point, but I don’t think we are there yet - even with the latest frontier models.

That’s a you problem, not the AI. Stand up to your manager and explain to them how the situation is their fault. Or take responsibility for your complicity from not quitting. But don’t blame the AI for process failures that it did not impose on you.

I could not agree more. The rise of sandboxing reflects a decrease in trust. Not just in AI. You just don’t download stuff from the internet anymore. It does not matter who created it, or whether it is open source. There is too great a possibility that the package has been blessed with either incompetence or malice by its creators or contributors.

I hope nobody thinks that software produced by these obviously immoral sociopathic corporations should be exempt from such suspicion, when history shows time and time again with news stories like this that they do not deserve such trust.

That’s all we have left. Speeches, voting, and juries will not save us from a system this corrupt. The ongoing civil war will turn bloody eventually.
