Octarine dev here! Unfortunately the app doesn't work for the web given the architectural decisions.

Also the app's been around for over 3 years now, and isn't vibe coded (since I saw it in this thread around vibe coding apps).

Open to any feedback if you've been using it for a while

Yup, I know it's been around for longer, probably wasn't the best example. But it's just the first native app I've thought of and with how much it's been changing, it constantly feels new.

I do like most of it, but the pace of upgrades is a bit too fast for me compared to obsidian, which feels more stable for now. There's also parts of the obsidian editor (the plain-text view, I never use preview mode) that just feels better than every other notes app I've tried so far. Although obsidian as a whole is something I'm also trying to move off of.

Love the polish of octarine though. Has the revenue been decent so far?

Ah the fast pace of updates is because I quit my startup job to go full time on this since last September! So it's a day job for me now, which means I don't need to only spend a few hours per weekend, and thus can get to my backlog faster!

As for revenue, it did give me enough confidence to quit my day job (was pretty well paid for my country), and Octarine since the past 3 months, has exceeded that as well :)

That's amazing, great job mate.

What's the number one place/site you got customers from?

I wanna say reddit? But it's a mix of things, some users come from chatgpt, some from searching for competitors on google.

I don't do marketing (I do a post on reddit once in 3 months or so for updates, but it doesn't get that much traction). Feel like it's word of mouth. Some of the early users told more people they knew, and they did the same.

Now a ton of customers bring the name up in their reddit threads (like you did here), and that's generally it.

I'd love for conversions to be higher compared to the install count, but it's still healthy for an indie project with a relatively higher price point (people are too used to free, or $19 products).

As someone who's played the game since the Beta and the AllStars maps in Frozen Throne, love when anything related to dotes shows up.

Haven't checked the repo, but guessing you using the opendota apis? Anything that you do different compared to dotabuff/opendota?

In the counter pick, would love if you could enter a match ID to prefill data, and then see what could've been a better pick? Last picked Ember but was countered by the enemy picking Ursa on their last pick. Given the rest of the draft would a different hero would be better?

Shamelessly plugging my app Octarine (https://octarine.app) for users that may want a more WYSIWYG editing experience while storing all notes on device in markdown, which is also written in Rust (Tauri), and NOT vibe coded :)

Wow, this looks awesome. Downloading now.

Thank you! Open to any and all feedback!

Um well, they shouldn't have done that. "If it means they go broke and need to shut down for me to keep having my free tier DB for 3 tables and 2 users, so be it, go broke"

Give Octarine (https://octarine.app) a try?

Built with tauri & rust, and is more performant, and doesn't rely on random contributions for basic things as plugins.

Disclaimer - I build it.

As someone who specifically started building Octarine, just for this reason, I understand.

Having to rely on random devs for the most basic functionality and passing it off as `community does what it wants` is weird. Either add it in yourselves, or accept the fact that given your app requires external contributors to work at a little above the basic level, there are going to be security issues.

Writing a whole blog post, and throwing shade on "other apps" that have far more dependencies than Obsidian is weird to me.

Anyway, it seems like you can't really talk bad about them, since there's a huge following that just comes at you, and that feels weird, cause they apparently can throw shade, others can't just talk back.

A little late to this, but would you be interested in giving Octarine (https://octarine.app) a try?

I try to solve this by running a small embedding model on device, and the Ask Octarine feature, suggests what you may need to find/look. Isn't as sophisticated as Spotify's or the recommendation algo, however it provides a nice starting point, and then allows you to chat/RAG your way around notes!

Here's a small documentation writeup & video about it, if you want to look instead of try - https://docs.octarine.app/working-with-ai/ask-octarine

I used it during dev for debugging, figured to just expose it for anyone that is used to having a counter on top of their games :)

If an fps counter makes an app seem illegitimate to you, and the countless changelog, user testimonials don’t help, then nothing I say will convince you otherwise, so I’m not going to waste either of our times :)

Not at the moment, but it’s something I use in VSCode, so it’s on the backlog to be brought, just low on the priority list.

Since find/replace works fine for the current use case (even if not optimal)

When that is in while keeping it lightweight, I will be a customer. Multi cursor is a an incredibly versatile find and replace. It can remove newlines at specific points. It can skip a few characters of text. It can go up and down a certain number of lines before manipulating text.

Got it. I'll take a look, but there's no timeline guarantees.

The use case is far too niche to move engineering efforts to immediately, so it'll be prioritised when either:

- the ask quantity increases.

- when an adjacent part of the code is being improved/fixed and this could be tacked upon in the same release.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you! I haven't really used zotero, but I feel you can integrate it using url schemes? I have a PR up that opens up `octarine://` url scheme to allow creating notes/folders (it was built for the webclipper repo).

Currently keymaps aren't modifiable, but there's an item on the roadmap to change hotkeys.

I don't have much clue about integration of such features as well unfortunately. Another thing I just realized though is, when you press CTRL+Z it will always open the "Recently Viewed" tab, I think that hotkey combination gotta be changed :D

Are you by any chance on a german keyboard? or a different keyboard layout?

I've had a report before where they keyboard layout messes up, for Z & Y. `Cmd + Y` is Recently viewed while `Z` does undo

I'm on a german keyboard layout, yeah.

Figured! I'll spend time soon to have the keyboard layouts not dictate hotkeys or override them.
