While you're talking about the homophobia, let's not ignore the blatant racism on 4chan. The work n-gger is not only casually thrown around on those boards, at this point it's ingrained racism that's influencing a lot of young teens visiting the site and is subtly encouraged by the moderators. It's disgusting and even thought I'm a strong advocate for the freedom of speech, I fear the power of effective propaganda.
I can't seem to find HTTPS Everywhere or smooth gestures, two of my most used extensions, anywhere on the new chrome web store. It looks like a new walled garden approach to something that was working well the way it was.
It wasn't working well, and it was as much a walled garden as the chrome approach. XUL extensions were/are very strongly tied to mozilla, and allegedly a cause of its enormous memory leakage.
If you want an open approach look to userjs (e.g. userscripts.org); with a little bit of effort you can make a script that works across FF/chrome/opera/probably others. Of course, you'll still find idiots writing things that only work in firefox.
He stole a kitchen appliance and his dad punished him for it. He seems genuinely sorry and is working hard to make amends in the process growing as a person both socially and financially. This is not abuse, it's a right way to raise a responsible human that takes responsibility for his actions. I think it's heartbreaking that you ignored the relative good in the story and chose to hone in on the "spanking" that a rebellious child may need a few times in his life.
As a huge Miles Davis fan I was very tempted to upvote this but refrained from doing so. My general rule of thumb is to not upvote/comment on anything unless it is absolutely relevant to HN's outlook (I'm obviously making an exception for this comment). Anything it takes to keep HN the way it is.
HN is eclectic the way it is. The guidelines call for anything of intellectual interest. The bar tends to be higher for atypical material, that's all.
This piece is good because it's a great artist speaking frankly about his craft. It's surprisingly vivid. I'm not a jazz fan and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
You can learn more from a great artist in a different field than from an average worker in your own.
And really, I don't think it's much of stretch to liken a great jazz musician to a great developer. The flow, improvisation and interpretation in the music. The way notes and bars can come together to become something greater than the sum of their parts. You can find all that in great code too :)
It's going to be hard for the caste system to stay rigid because in larger cities there is no way of verifying any of this. In bigger cities like Mumbai, it's already pretty apparent with most kids growing up indifferent to the complex caste adherence of the past. Most of these kids would not be able to attribute a caste to people based on their last names as that knowledge has been lost. Going with the theme of this thread, this is definitely not true across the board but definitely applies to the large majority, at least in major towns and cities.
