earwig is a purpose-driven tech startup helping tradespeople get a better deal at work. Harrison is the Founder and Product Manager, Ben is the UX Designer, and we’re looking to complete the team with a Full-stack Developer.
We want to give to tradespeople the tech-enabled benefits knowledge workers take for granted. We’re currently validating propositions that meet our mission statement of equipping tradespeople to win at work, including:
- Crowdsourced sentiment data to increase transparency and make choosing bad jobs less likely.
- Dynamically allocated jobs to help tradespeople avoid gaps in their earnings.
- A simple, accessible drag-and-drop CV-builder so tradespeople can get the jobs they want.
As the company's first developer, you will be instrumental in ensuring what we build is technically feasible, and solves the problems we want to solve. You will also help to create our company culture.
We’ve raised a pre-seed round of £420k, and won pilots with major contractors Skanska and Willmott Dixon. We’re backed by Europe’s leading tech-for-good VCs including Bethnal Green Ventures and the Resolution Foundation.

More than half of construction firms use agency workers to grow their workforce on-demand. Firms rely on a multi-layered structure where 1,000+ recruitment agencies sit between them and workers. Agencies vary drastically in their performance and with no quality control, workers don’t know what they’re getting into before they get into it. To thicken the plot, agencies outsource payroll, adding yet more complexity and confusion for workers.

We're tackling a salient and seriously juicy problem that could change the face of work for everyone, not just tradespeople. We're doing it as a 3-person product team optimised for speed and learning. For gig tradespeople who use recruitment agencies and feel like the construction industry doesn’t have their best interests at heart, earwig is a career jetpack. It’s what a careers centre could be if it was built by tradespeople and leveraged the latest tech. And unlike standard careers centres, earwig understands tradespeople’s deepest needs — from basic security to self-actualisation — and gives them thrusters to push the boundaries of their potential.
earwig is now hiring a full-stack developer and a digital product designer (both London-based) for a pioneering product team to radically improve work for the 45 million gig tradespeople around the world.
We're looking for someone to join our team as tech lead/co-founder. We have code but this will need to be rewritten so this is a green-field opportunity for you. Talking to people and running UX/problem/solution interviews is your bread and butter.

We don’t mind remote working but you will need to meet us in London quite often.

Following 12 months of research, initial investment, prototyping, user testing and having secured support from three major sector bodies, we are now looking for a competent full-stack developer to build the earwig MVP to be launched in March 2019. The MVP has been spec’d independently by two devs and should take 6-8 weeks. The results of this MVP will strengthen the business plan we will use to raise venture capital in April/May 2019.
This is a fixed-term contract but there is the potential for you to become full-time/co-founder.
You must have:
Degree or equivalent in computer science, engineering or relevant field 5 years’ experience in IT and data management Experience building products that went to market Proficiency with fundamental front-end languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript Familiarity with JavaScript frameworks such as Angular JS, React and Amber Familiarity with server side languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, PHP and .Net Familiarity with database tech such as MySQL, Oracle and MongoDB Experience in database modelling (from data modelling -> applications -> security -> maintenance) A highly analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills Attention to detail
