Seconded.

I'll probably leave reddit when old.Reddit.com gets the chop

I suspect I will too. I’ve been playing with the app a bit as it’s easier for me on my phone to view subs that are mostly pictures (e.g. awuariums). But I only do it from time to time.

Apollo was much better, of course.

Same, but it sounds like Lemmy still has some issues, and it'll be hard to replace some of the niche subreddits.

It kind of doesn’t matter. The thing that makes Reddit, to me, is its size. Lemmy will never get there, so it won’t be able to replace it for me.

I love Mastodon, it’s what I use, but it’s not what I lost with Twitter. Some stayed, some went to BlueSky, some Threads, some just gave up. And we’ll never have it again. Assholes destroyed a whole world out of selfishness.

This is the problem. There's no good replacement for Reddit right now, and Digg just died again.

I’m honestly amazed they tried that. It’s been so long, it felt like a play to cache in on the name but I feel like a huge chunk of people don’t really remember it or weren’t even around for it.

42 inches! thats a lot of viewing area.

Indeed! The big monitor is about 1m from me, the median a bit below my eyes. The laptop on which I type on sits in-between and the two screens align almost perfectly (optically). This setup works well for me and I feel it’s very ergonomic. That's why I can't go back to tiny (<32") screens anymore.

You could get something smaller but have it closer to your face than 1m?

The sort of “visual impact” a screen can have is mostly a combination of what percentage of your FOV it consumes.

People think they’ve got a bunch of screen real estate when they buy a big TV to use as a monitor… and then they use it a twice or more the distance of a regular monitor.

It feels very nice on the eyes to have it at a certain distance.

The same can be said about those working in the weapons industry etc.

Yes, the window has shifted considerably since Google glass

I wonder if a big part of it is simplification at Apples end. It’s just easier and more cost effective to make more M4s regardless of where they end up?

Honestly this is iPads biggest problem. My is from 2019, and there’s just no reason to upgrade, unlike a phone I don’t need it to have a better camera or be lighter or whatever. They nailed it years ago and the hardware is so good the software never really challenges it.

On the other hand, that’s also one of the best things about it. Part of what makes it worth the cost is that nothing important changes and it can last for a long time.

I miss the online storage. My ISP let you use it to host your own site. So I hosted and tinkered - bliss

Immich is probably the best option

I'm sure grandparent meant to modify it so they'd just have to click "Backup to cloud" on their iPhone and instead of the iPhone sending their files to Apple's servers, it sends them to a local backup server...

A lot of iPhone apps can backup the iOS photo library these days, including the abovementioned Immich, Google Photos, and Dropbox.

Immich can get pretty close to that experience, with the iPhone app and a local immich instance.

Or ente photos: https://ente.io/

This was my plan, but then I just switched to lost of chess.com

I recently got a digital chess board (Chessnut Pro), game changer. It’s like an ereader for chess.
