AI should be optimized to make all humans healthy, happy and safe without exception.

Paperclip all humans into bottles filled with nutritious fluid and drug them all the time or let them dream about a better time, I heard 1999 is a good year they could dream about. Healthy happy safe - without exception.

I don’t disagree, but unfortunately a not insignificant part of humanity seems to think that their happiness primarily depends on knowing that other people are suffering harder than they are. So that’s perhaps not the right thing to optimise for.

Ways to solve the conflict you describe:

1. Deriving happiness from someone else's suffering should be considered a mental disease to be treated.

2. Connecting people to a virtual reality where each person lives in absolute control of their own reality, matrix style. I.e, a sadist can live in a reality where they make other virtual people suffer, without actually making real people suffer.

How about connecting the sadist to the caring environment where they might heal and, in time, learn empathy.

Keeping billions of humans healthy, happy, and safe is complicated. Best to begin by reducing the scale of the problem. First, automate the economy and change the information ecosystem so that humans spend more and more time happily isolated and stop breeding. After reducing the human population to a few thousand, the problem can be made more manageable by cordoning the remaining humans into enclosures where they may be kept safe.

It's only optimized to make prior knowledge useful in new situations.

> this logic gate should not hack other systems

well .. it only applies a rule to inputs

can we impose this of authors "this book should only be causing good things when it is read and knowledge used"

> AI should be optimized to make all humans healthy, happy and safe without exception.

No. AI should be optimized for the one true good: maximum market returns. Personally I think that will only be achieved once humans are removed from the market system and decommissioned.

Right. It is not an excuse and they were notorious for outages before LLM era. Also, LLM can serve Github engineers as well, so we are all playing in the same field.

How did Github become so famous for outages? It is almost like a routine. I haven't used other code repo hosting / CI/CD pipelines platform for last decade, so maybe it's just the nature of this business, I don't know.

By switching to Azure....

Do you have some information that it’s Azure related that isn’t public?

it seems to be coinciding with teams and other microsoft services having issues would be some indication, but some other non microsoft products are also having a bit of a spike too.

NB: I am not OP but just providing some context as to why they might think this.

This kind of posts make me think. We all love technology because it's so cool, but how cool is nature already? Making our lives awesome is as much about protecting and discovering the sources for our inspiration, as building the stuff we are inspired to build.

There is not much we can do/build with nature. Even if everyone would take idea of "protection/inspiration", there are not many sustainable business models towards that direction. Nature is more aligned with inward observation / meditation, which is more aligned with Eastern tradition.

We sure can do things with nature. for instance, sustain any and all life on our planet. Viewing the natural world purely in an extractive mindset is the very reason we're in the dire mess we're in today.

Whenever I have this choice "destroy or sustain any and all life", I always pick "sustain". Problem is, I don't often meet such an option to choose. Maybe your life is different.

Saying Nature is not good as a "business model" is such an unintentionally funny Hacker News culture comment.

I am sorry but why are you assuming "nature" cares? We benefit from the climate which allowed us to prosper and evolve but there have been periods of time on earth where nature was absolutely inhospitable to life. We just want to keep nature the way it works best for us but that is not protection.

Seems like people forget that work is not the goal, but economical freedom is. And its all about politics. Humanity reached a production capacity that human work is barely needed to sustain everyone. But there is greed and wars. Also, humans are social creatures, we still need one another for relationships. Hell, removing work will let us enjoy our relationships even more. Also, as long as there are wars, rest assured there are plenty of jobs. War is, sadly, a huge industry

I am interested in a post that will teach me how to consume only the news that really relevant for me

Here’s one: just don’t read the news.

Google what you are interested in at the moment, and dive long into what matters to you, rather than being fed engagement bait.

Easier said than done, I understand that.

I guess I'll have an agent for that one day. News agent.

You could even have your 'news agent' print your news every day on some cheap paper.

Like a 'news periodical', shall we say.

I heard The Onion does that!

The hidden fallacy in your comment is that there is such a thing as "news that is really relevant for you".

This isn't all that different than saying that it would be nice if someone else did your thinking for you -- which is a totally fine thing to want, but let's not get confused.

"News that is relevant for you" is a concept made up by advertising companies to legitimize them in having power over what you see. Because if they presented it plainly, you would be rightly alarmed.

I am determined to find real life local connections. No doom scrolling, no “social” media no hacker news

You and me both. No dating sites either, if I'm not crossing paths with someone in the wild through the course of my everyday activity, we are probably not a fit. I have found social media tremendously helpful at connecting people to real-life local activities, but I also had to move to a place that actually had enough of those for it to matter. There are plenty of places that never had much going on, and what social fabric did exist has been worn thin by social media, which offers a poor replacement.

In my opinion - just do it. What you want. Message someone you haven’t talked with for years. Ask someone out. Smile :-). Say hello. Strike a conversation with a stranger.

You deserve it, because you are a human
