See the first message of TFA. The author complains that amdgpu has way too many linuxisms that make it impractical to port it to non-Linux ( unless you are already emulating Linux). On the other hand, the nv kernel driver is portable, up to the point that it is easier to port that to Haiku and then change the entire Mesa to use it than it is to port amdgpu (which wouldn't need Mesa changes).
Of course a Linux driver is going to make use of Linuxims. That’s literally the point of a Linux device driver.
Given how performance-sensitive device like a graphics card is, you’d naturally want as few abstractions between your OS and your hardware as possible.
But there is no evidence whatsoever for what you are saying (in fact the nvidia drivers are portable and may perform comparably or even better than the free ones).
On the other hand here we have evidence of how this has made it impossible for any OS other than Linux to provide support for amdgpu (except if you rip a huge chunk of Linux code, which only works if your OS is extremely UNIX-like to begin with), while other OSes support NVidia cards just fine (which do not really have a complete free driver to begin with!).
You did well to skip the 2015-2020 era (butterfly keyboards, touchbar).
With that said anything M1 or newer is going to be a delightful upgrade for you. An enormous jump in performance, battery life, and thermal performance.
In 2021, I upgraded to the 2021 MBP from the 2012 first-gen retina. So I also skipped the bad models. The difference is night and day. You don't really notice the notch, especially if you view it as giving you extra space for the menu bar instead of eating into your screen.

Why would I do that? I'm not a domain expert in chat apps, and I've already got my own projects and software to fix. If I'm going to take on the maintenance of some chat app, why wouldn't I just build the whole ass thing myself from the beginning? Or, more prudently, why wouldn't I just skip over this one and find a chat app that's got a track record of continuing support so I don't give myself a headache down the road?
If you can find or build something better, nobody's tryin' to stop you from doin' it. To the contrary, the world could certainly use more decent options in this space. Having choices is a good thing. :)
"why would you need features on the thing on which the vast majority of your company's interactions and unofficial note keeping and knowledge building is happening" is a fun question to ask, when the project in question doesn't have bot actions or webhooks.
