It's noteworthy for sure, however I am more annoyed by how it is reported. It was always like that for sure, however when the same medium proclaims being the arbiter of truth (fact checkers) I get really disgusted.
> I’m bored of Netflix. They have simply gone the assembly line direction instead of the direction of art, at least for some big niches. For example, every True Crime docuseries on Netflix is the same crap.
My benchmark for this genre is Forensic Files. I have yet to find another one that is this concise and informative.
I agree. Though slightly off topic, Forensic Files was pretty biased. The educational aspect mostly makes up for it, but they make forensic science appear way more rock solid than it was back at the time. Many of the crimes featured were solved because the perpetrator was so incompetent. But every episode had to end with something along the lines of "this would have been the perfect crime if not for the science!"
Would be nice to have a show like that again with a similar format but eased back on the law enforcement propaganda.
> That's very difficult to say, actually; the Moskova was sunk with them after all, but the bigger issue is the abhorrent and indiscriminate shelling of civilian populations by the Russians. Fields with farmers and homes and hospitals with civilians are not of military importance. And yet, Russia keeps shooting them.
According to western media.
> The truth is Putin's Kremlin is to blame for this wide-spread shortage
Yeah that would be easy, however it's not as cut and dry (it rarely is). You could as easily blame Zelenskyy for killing thousands of east Ukrainians prior. And then their is the coup d'état in 2014 as well and the constant provocations of the NATO in general. So I am not so sure that Putin's Kremlin alone is to blame.
Almost everything being put out now is propaganda for someone. Not sure why anyone would trust western media but the alternative certainly isn't to trust RT, Sputnik, or any of their sibling media outlets either. Anyone who thinks they've got a good handle on the situation in Ukraine is living in a bubble of wishful thinking. Eventually the physical world will win out regardless of what the Metaverse and cyberspace presents as being true.
In Germany this is called "Gratismut" (gratis bravery). It's the current thing to hate Russia, so they don't lose anything by doing a passionate write-up about it. McDonald's also wants to convince you that they have any values, but in reality they have no problem with horrendous human rights violations in other countries.
What changed here of course is that after Putin gave Aeroloft the go ahead to seize aircraft they were leasing, western business lost any appetite for the Russian market. When your assets can be taken over at any moment and its encouraged by the state, its best to cut your losses.
A similar but more drastic example are the various communist revolutions in the 20th century. It was standard practice for the new governments to cancel any debts or obligations the previous government had and seize all sorts of foreign owned assets in country. That inevitably destroyed its diplomatic relations with many nations for decades.
So as you note, its not because McDonald's or any other corporation has morals, they are amoral entities. Its all just business and right now business in Russia is bad.
Do not forget that there was a wave of seizures of russian-owned assets in the west.
I would not be surprised, if Aeroflot still had to pay the leases they owe, but the proceeds would be paid to subjects who had their assets seized abroad. Until it evens out 1:1.
I could be mistaken but with the exception of Germany seizing the gazprom terminal, I think all of the other seizures have been to specifically sanctioned individuals. Of course in Russia they have a oligarchy so they probably see sanctioning a person the same as sanctioning a company.
There is no such thing as a yacht owned by a person; even if you wanted to operate some small one, you would create SPE (=special purpose entity, i.e. a company) for it. So they were owned by companies. Yachts are operated as businesses, especially larger ones.
And it is not just about yachts and airplanes. There were freezed accounts in usd and eur, i.e. the primary motivator for switching sale of oil and gas to rubles. These were owned by companies too.
So in this regard, there's no difference. The famous Bismarck quote about Russians comes to mind.
I understand how the ultra rich operate. There is still a difference between seizing personal assets that are in shell companies for tax reasons or what have you and seizing capital of real companies that do real business.
Which means the internet is the better place to be for any person. The problem is usually if one side is not anonymous, then it's different, otherwise anything is fair game in regards to discussions I think, but maybe you find a good counter example.
Yeah, however that is not what happens if you just let that behavior described above slide. Punching someone because they said something to you is usually wrong especially if they don't even know each other (so it can't be personal, really).
I've definitely been in a number of situations where what passes for craft and hateful online speech what get someone severely beaten oh, and I don't think that's necessarily A Bad Thing. It's not a solution to the greater problems of society, but a punch to the face or the threat thereof it certainly keeps people from verbally assaulting people in real life.
Of course there are problems with people acting as adjudge and dishing out physical punishment, but that doesn't mean that Justice isn't served in some instances
I disagree that physical violence is justified for any anonymous conversation however hateful it might be. If it is not anonymous then there are things like slander where things get more blurry, however I am not a strong proponent of vigilante justice, so I would not call it just either.
> It's impossible to convince most people of even the most obvious truths.
You should maybe ask yourself why you need to convince them.
> The wisest path is to fake agreement, keep your thoughts for yourself and move away ASAP.
That's not wise, that's dishonest to the other person and to yourself. The last part (avoiding the other person) is obviously a completely valid option, but only one of several.
I agree with that assessment. Which means it should come as no surprise to anyone, if people are harsher online to people they literally do not know. It's not nice, but the alternative is also not very pleasant, which is real life and the constant misuse of status and lack of anonymity. Although it kind of creeped up to the internet as well.
> It's primarily the labor-heavy working-class white male (in the white male demographic) that has been brutalized by changes in the US and global economy. They have been left behind to drown in a pool of fentanyl.
That sounds like most people are actually more negatively affected by the economy compared to decades prior.
No, not "most". It's 30% or 40% of people. That's not "most". In particular, it's not enough to dominate the statistics.
Let me say very clearly: It's far too many people. I don't care if it's less than a majority, and I don't care if it swings the overall statistics. It's still too many people that are being economically destroyed.
I love hacker news, complaining about semantics when someone says most people are having their lives ruined with the clap back that it's only 40% is the best possible reply!
As far as I know you can't sensibly OD on LSD for example. It doesn't really cause addiction and to OD you need to take something like 100x the effective dose. However the psychosis danger would still be a valid concern ("rolling a dice" puts it quite nicely)
the OD part wasn't with respect to LSD but towards drugs in general. I've known people who got started with psychedelics, then moved on to molly (not real MDMA, like the dangerous synthetic street shit), and onto other stuff after that. It makes people more susceptible to drug culture
I can't imagine anyone physically ODing on LSD if it's legit. But there's two risks: adverse mental reactions and adverse physical reactions if the shit you take isn't real
